WordPress is a great CMS but some of the default settings are – for good reason – quite cautious. One issue I had was having to constantly login and update customers websites to the latest plugin and theme versions,
WordPress itself provides the functionality to automatically update these things, but setting it up requires editing the code for each site which can be a bit of a headache.
And so Update It! was born. It’s a simple plugin that allows granular control WordPress automatic updates that doesn’t require any coding or access to the underlying WordPress code.
Configuring The Plugin
It’s very easy to use. Literally set the options, and forget about it!
To set the options, you can either click on the ‘Settings’ link from the Update It! entry in the main plugins section, or navigate the left hand menu to Settings >> Update It!
Either way, you will arrive at the Update It! Configuration page:
By default, the plugin settings default to the standard WordPress settings. You can change these to enable or disable automatic updates for plugins, themes and WordPress minor and major updates.
You also have the option to set when the plugin will delete it’s own data. The defaults here are usually fine.
Once done, click on Save Changes and WordPress will automatically start updating!
Please note: that the updates are done using WordPress cron, so will only happen once a day on WordPress’s schedule. So don’t worry if it nothing gets updated instantly!
Installing the Update It! Automatic Update Plugin For WordPress plugin is easy. You just need to download the zip file below and install it in the same way as any other WordPress plugin.
The WordPress Codex contains full instructions on how to do this.
You can download the latest stable pre-compiled plugin installation (.zip) file below.
